Bible Reading

II Tim. 3.16-17 “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

  1. The Bible is important because of where comes from.

(1)The Bible comes from God.

  1. The Holy Ghost inspired the writings through various writers.
  2. The word inspired means breathed. It is a part of God, issuing from within God, John 1.1 “In the beginning was the word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
  3. The word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thought and intent of the heart.” Heb. 4.12

(2)The Bible comes through man. It was not found under a rock, nor was it written by one man, telling his thoughts or opinions. It was given in two testaments over4000 years, through 42 people all with the special guidance of the Holy Ghost. Because of this guidance it has incredible unity and historical accuracy.

II. The Bible is important because of its intended use.

  1. Doctrine
    1. The Word of God is our sole source of Direction
    2. Doctrine comes from the Bible, dogmas come from man.
  2. Reproof, conviction
    1. The Lost John 20.31 “But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.”
    2. The saved
  3. Correction “They [the Bereans] received the Word with all readiness, and searched the scriptures daily to find our if these things were so.”
    1. The Bible is important because of history (His Story)
      1. The Bible itself is historically correct
      2. The people and places are real and many can be traced through other historical references.
      3. Archeology has proven existence of locations that critics once denied.
      4. The Bible theology came to life in the real person of Jesus
      5. Godly incarnation
      6. Salvation of man
      7. Forgiveness of sin.
      8. Resurrection and life after death
      9. Manifestations of God, [ie the baptism of Christ]
      10. The Bible does not wrestle philosophically with the nature of God and man, instead it narrates the actual events of history through which God has revealed Himself and His intentions for human beings.
